The "Fake Nerd Girl" Debate

Fine...fine....FINE. I am fine-ally going to weigh in on something that has been irking me for sometime now. Yes, I might get rant-y....I might even get preachy, but gosh darn-it something needs to be said about this.

Fake nerd girls.

Now I don't really know where this comes from (or really care for that matter) but I have to say a few things about it. I'm a girl. I'm a girl who identifies herself as being a "nerd". Why? I call myself a nerd because I have often lacked social skills with others because I'm more dedicated to my interests and passions. It wasn't until quite recent that I began coming out of my book fort to discover that there were a lot of like minded people on the internet who I could talk to about this sort of thing without feeling judged. Hence, this blog.

Now there is some talk that there are girls on the internet who are "fake nerds" doing it for attention and what not. Now this strikes a chord with me on two accounts. I don't want any nerd girls out their to feel like they don't belong because they are considered "fake". With that said, I don't like the idea that there are some PEOPLE out their who are using the guise of nerd to either troll or take advantage of a culture that has time and time again gave me a sense of belonging in this world.

I guess what I really take issue with is that anyone would think that I, only any nerdy girl like me would chose to fake being a nerd. Think of it this way. Now a days, it's socially acceptable to be a nerd.  But back when I was younger (I know, it was so long ago) it really wasn't.  I went to a small, private school where I really didn't fit in because I was to busy writing fantasy stories and drawing Lord of the Rings-esque characters in my notebook to bother with Hilary Duff and the like. Still, I kept everything I did very private. I remember when I first really learned about superheroes from a special on the History Channel called Comic Book Superheroes, Unmasked. I suddenly became obsessed with learning everything I could about superheroes, but only within my means because I was too afraid to ask my parents to buy me a comic book. I began watching The Justice League and X-men in secret to learn everything I could about these enchanting characters.  I didn't know the extent of my secrecy until one day in my reading class. My teacher would give us treats for finding vocabulary words used in television shows or books. I had recently heard the word "thwart" on an episode of The Justice League.  I was about to raise my hand to share the word when I realized that by doing so, I would tell the whole class about my love of superheroes.  I kept my hand down, afraid of being even weirder than I already was.  I'm glad to say that I embrace who I was and am now.  That it because the internet is such a free place where someone is bound to judge you, but their are plenty of others (or a faithful few C;) who will be quick to step in and support you.

Now do you think that maybe the sudden influx of nerd girls is coming from the fake that it is now acceptable for girls to declare that they love Star Wars in a world where they once would have automatically ostracized for saying so? I certainly will say that the rise of gamer girls made me want to express my love of video games!  Sure, there will always be people who try to exploit a trend for what ever their reasons, but should we really let a few drops of deception spoil it for all those girls out their who finally have a voice?

I really hope that you will try or will continue to give nerdy girls a chance.  This nerdy girl will surely try to cast a positive impression upon the impressionable being that is the internet.  And I can promise you this, you will NEVER see me posing provocatively with a game controller (sorry if that disappoints a few of you).

Now here's a nerd/gamer girl I aspire to be!

Wreck-It Ralph

First off, I've reached over 3000 views! It's amazing how that managed to happen despite my absence. It just goes to show that I have some dedicated fans that never fail to make me smile! Thanks to you all poppets (yeah I'm in one of "those" moods) for sticking with me despite my lazy fingers.

Now....

ON TO WRECK-IT RALPH!

. . . .

I really struggled with what to say for this review because of my mixed personality. From the side of a reviewer I could see some flaws in this film (many steaming from it's trailer that aimed the plot of the movie in a far different direction than where is actually went), but from the view of a fangirl with both a passion for video games and cute, sugary concoctions (I promise I'll elaborate on that later) I was sucked into this game like all of us  zombified gamers have been known to do when a new Diablo game drops (Minus, perhaps the nerd rage at errors).

No disrespect meant, my man.
I freak out when my Amateur Surgeon 2 App does't work on my Iphone
With all that said, I'm going to try my best to address both of my opinions, both as a reviewer and a gamer in hopes that I can reach some logical conclusion about how this movie ultimately made me feel and what you can expect it to do for you.

Let's start with the flaws of this movie to get all the negative energy out of the way. Well, maybe it's not fair for me to say this is going to be a negative critisim. Perhaps we are looking for the word frustrated. Having watched the trailer for this movie, I though Wreck-it Ralph was going to be about Ralph, a video game villain wanting more out of life (in true Disney fashion) and deciding to go to the game Heroes Duty (Every pun IS intended) and proving he can save the day. (SPOILERS AHEAD) Well that is exactly what this movie does, for about 10 minutes of it's runtime.

No, Ralph quickly overcomes the challenges of Heroes Duty (which really makes me question it's true difficulty for a game advertised to be a Super Meat Boy style grinder....my pun intended) and accidentally ends up in the almost sickeningly sweet racer game, Sugar Rush. It is in this game that we spend the majority of the movie. This is where my conflict comes in. I'm sure plenty of hardcore gamers went to this game expecting a solid tribute to video game nostalgia and were met with wacky worlds of original creation. Don't get me wrong, Sugar Rush certainly gave me the feel of Snowboard Kids if it was dipped in bubblegum and sprinkles. Still, I worried that some of the guys out there would be turned off by it's candy coated sentiment. I honestly would love to hear my male fan base's opinion on this setting choice. Ralph's main companion through the movie is an overly adorable little girl/glitch name Vanellope.

Okay...with all that said....my inner fangirl needs to come out and say this very clearly. This movie isn't perfect. It has a pretty predictable story and we all know exactly how it's going to end, but you know what? I LOVED it. Call me a girly girl if you need, but I adored Sugar Rush and would play it in a heart beat if it was a real game and/or if I had any skills in racer games. I loved Vanellope even when she could be a little annoying with her banter. I genuinely felt for her, a humble little glitch looking to belong, much like Ralph.

I also appreciated the subtle nods to the greats of games. I won't spoil them all for you (But please post all the cameos you noticed!) but it tickled me pink how much love and knowledge of games went into the background of this film. I'm sure that Sugar Rush was the better setting vs. Heroes Duty because parents would find it nonthreatening (less video game violence) and this movie would appeal to girls just as much as it does to boys.

If there is one thing I can really appreciate about this movie is that it could possible turn more girls on to video games. And in a society where more of us girls are slowly working over to the dark side, I couldn't be happier.

So over all, if you are looking to have simple, sugary fun this movie with hug your at your gamer core, if you are looking for a lot of deep substance with a fresh plot or non-stop video game intensity, this movie might not be your cup of tea.

Now for a change of pace, something ridiculously girly/warped to balance me out ^_^

(Would you love me any other way?)

My Very Nerdy Birthday!

Guess what gals and guys? One, I'm updating! Two, I'm going to be 22 years old tomorrow (Remember, remember the 5th of November)!

:Shoot off confetti now:

I did most of my celebrating with my family on Saturday, but it doesn't mean I'm not going to do some celebrating tomorrow! I'm going to see "Wreck-it Ralph" (FINALLY) and I promise a review will follow!

But since we will have to wait a little bit for that, I want to give you all a project in the meantime.

On Saturday I made a new friend,

My lovely bf knows how to spoil me!

There's just one problem! This foxy lady (I feel a feminine vibe from her, no?) doesn't have a name! I've been known for taking 2 weeks to name a stuffed animal, so I thought I'd ask you guys for some suggestions! Just make it clean and cute! If I get a lot of suggestions I will put up a poll to vote for her name!

Until then, hang tight and be on the look out for my "Wreck-it Ralph" review!

A Long Needed Explanation

Well, well, well....it's been a while. Quite a LONG while! First off, before I launch into a list of excuses, I want to apologize for my absence. I've been gone for over a month with barely any words to any of you for why. With that, here's my explanation.

It started with some health problems. Nothing serious at all, but I had a few instances back to back that really bogged me down physically and, as a result, my mental faculties weren't all there. I was exhausted and just trying to cruise by with what energy I had left. Next-ly, I got a big girl job shortly after. This job is very time consuming and came without warning. As a result, I had to quickly jump into it. I love the work, but the adjustment to my schedule has left me with precious time for a personal life. This resulted in my writing taking a place on the back burner.

I really wanted to come back and write, but it seemed like when ever the opportunity was about I had 0 energy or was needed elsewhere.

On the bright-side, I'm back now. I can't promise the consistency I once had (at least not for a while) but I will do my best to stay connected to you guys as well as keep some semblance of a schedule.

I appreciate your patience. I'm sorry to everyone I've been in contact with that I fell off the face of the earth. I really didn't mean to hurt or offend anyone.

But I'm back and I'm going to make up for lost time...

Starting with this.

I played this game a lot as a child....I'd like to this this video is based on how I played the game.

Toodles (But not for long!)

Thanks of a Fangirl - 2000 Views!!!!!

Woah!  Just....holy...sparkles!  When did this happen?  I'm already at 2000 views and you know who I have to thank for that?  You.  Yes, you!  All you wonderful people who've been reading, watching, and promoting me and my lowly site deserve so much credit for my success!  I'd be lost without you!

So what does this mean for the next chapter in The Patchwork Nerd's story?  Well, for those of you who follow me on Twitter know, (and those of you who don't can follow me @ThePatchwrkNerd) I made a deal with you.  If I could make it to 2000 views before the start of August, I'd deliver you a video.  I'm going to follow through with that promise!  Now please understand that all I've got is a webcam and a VERY limited knowledge of Imovie, so we are going to try a Vlog style for a while.  I'm just going to need some time to get a youtube or blip account going (any suggestions on which to go with?) and to learn editing!  I can't promise they'll be pretty videos, but they will most certainly be fun!  Give me a week or two to bring that all together and then we can have some video fun!  I'm planning to do something similar to my "Babbles of Fangirl" articles, but babble briefly about several nerdy topics.  This is where you lovely darlings come in again.

What would you like me to babble about?  A movie? Video game? Some recent nerdy news?  Which pony is the best (and yes, I have a favorite!)? Share with me your ideas in the comments below and I'll do my best to get to babbling!  Until then, thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your help, support, and shares.  You are wonderfully, amazing fans and I can't wait to keep making you happy with my ramble-y, bamble-y articles!  Until the video comes out, be on the look out for a few more surprises!

Also follow me on twitter or facebook (Link here to follow! The Patchwork Nerd Facebook!)
